Configuration lost after re-power or reboot
Last Updated 5 years ago

All of our managed industrial grade, carrier grade and enterprise switches require specifically saving of the active running configuration or the configuration will be lost if the switch is re-powered. Stored in non-volatile RAM in the switch are the "default" configuration (used to restore the switch to factory default settings) and a "startup" configuration which is loaded at reboot and copied into volatile RAM as the active "Running" configuration at start up.

As settings are changed to the switch, whether they are done via the web GUI, the console CLI or via SNMP, those configuration changes are only done to the active running configuration and are immediately active. Any configuration actions that involve clicking a 'save' button are only saving those settings to the "Running" configuration.

After all configurations are completed, the very last action will be to save the "Running" configuration to the "Startup" configuration so that future reboots will run the desired configuration.

There are a number of ways to save the configuration:
1) In the web GUI, if the upper right-hand corner has a "floppy disc" icon, just click it (note: not all GUI have this feature).
2) In the web GUI, go to the lower left-hand corner and navigate Maintenance -> Configuration and select 'Save startup-config'.
3) In the CLI, at the root prompt, execute the command 'copy running-config startup-config'.

The configuration is now stored in non-volatile RAM.
