FRM220 - Inband Management Rack Solution Print E-mail
FRM220 and Line CardsA major application of media converters is to make use of optical fiber as the transmission media for extending the reach of interfaces between two locations. Media converters are deployed in pairs, typically between a two CO sides or between a CO and CPE location or between two CPE locations. The Ethernet media converter should be transparent to Layer 2 and Layer 3 protocols including, IEEE 802.1q, VLAN tag, Spanning Tree Protocol, IPX, IP etc. Using Managed Media Converters allows network administrators to remotely configure and monitor the fiber transmission network. The FRM220 provides many basic and advanced management features, such as:

  • Monitoring the media chassis power and fan status
  • Manage the individual line cards within the chassis
  • Manage the remote CPE converters using non-intrusive in-band techniques (OAM)
  • Gather performance data for retrieval by network management software

The configuration items available for the local line card and their fiber connected remote converters includes:
  • Setting the local and remote Ethernet speed and duplex
  • Enabling or Disabling the link
  • Receive local and remote status information such as TP link state or remote power failure (dying gasp)
  • Provide a link test without interfering with normal transmissions (loop back)
  • Facilitate a bandwidth control (ingress/egress) for the link
  • Configure from switch to converter mode to handle jumbo (9K bytes) packets
  • Provide local and remote online firmware upgrade when new functions or features are available
